Hair Rejuvenation

What is hair restoration?

Hair restoration is the process of promoting hair growth in balding or thinning areas. There are several different approaches to hair restoration available at Aesthetic Dermatology and Laser Surgery, and Dr. Breadon helps you explore the options during your consultation.

It’s important to note that the hair restoration procedures available at Aesthetic Dermatology and Laser Surgery are not cures for diseases that cause hair loss, though they may result in some regrowth for many people.

Instead of transplanting follicles from healthier areas of hair growth or replacing your hair with artificial or donor hair, hair restoration aims to repair the original follicles so you can grow your hair again naturally.

What are my options for hair restoration?

At Aesthetic Dermatology and Laser Surgery, Dr. Breadon often uses two types of injections for hair restoration:

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP)

PRP is a substance withdrawn from your blood. It contains platelets, which play a key role in the healing process, and growth factors. The components in PRP accelerate and enhance the natural healing process and may heal follicles that malfunction due to androgenic alopecia, a common cause of hair loss. It may also work for alopecia areata.

Intralesional Kenalog

To treat hair loss in African Americans, Dr. Breadon uses intralesional Kenalog injections. This medication is a steroid that promotes hair growth in patches of baldness or thinning areas.

What should I expect during a hair restoration procedure?

When you come in for hair restoration with PRP, Dr. Breadon must first take a blood sample. This part of the process is not necessary for those using intralesional Kenalog to treat hair loss.

Once he has a vial of your blood, Dr. Breadon places it in a centrifuge to spin it rapidly for several minutes. The spinning motion causes the blood components to separate into layers, and one of those layers is full of platelets. They’re suspended in your blood’s liquid base, called plasma.

Using either PRP or Kenalog, Dr. Breadon places a series of injections directly into your scalp. You might need several sessions of either injection type to see a significant improvement in hair growth.

Growing your own hair to minimize hair loss is the ideal option over using wigs or hairpieces. To find out more about PRP or Kenalog hair restoration, call Aesthetic Dermatology and Laser Surgery, or request an appointment online today.
